Subject:adventures in homemaking
Time:9:29 pm.
Mood: tired.
Aha, I tricked you. Despite the choice of icon, this entry has nothing to do with knitting! Instead, it's about our adventures in settling into our new home, and making it our space. So, Wednesday night, right before 10 pm, as I was getting ready to make my lunch for the next day before I went to bed, we hear something start beeping loudly. It sounded like it might have been the smoke detector, but was actually the carbon monoxide detector. Uhhh, crap? Having never had one of these before, I wasn't really sure how we were supposed to respond. We looked at the unit, which said if the alarm went off, to go outside and call 911. Protip: unplugging the unit while it's beeping is NOT how you make it stop beeping. When we did that, it just let out this long constant super loud beep until we plugged it back in again. My future hearing loss thanks you.

So, not knowing what else to do we opened all the windows (figuring if there's poisonous gas in our house, we want to let it out), went outside and called our landlord first. However, since we got her voicemail and didn't know what else to do, we did end up calling 911, and the operator sent the fire department over right away. It was a pretty fast response, too; I don't think we waited more than 10 minutes, if that. We were told that we shouldn't have opened the windows, because when the fire department comes, they do a reading for CO, and if the windows are open, they can't tell where it might have been coming from. Oops. But, they took their reading anyway, and didn't find any CO in our house. There are a bunch of different things that could cause a CO build up, but we don't really have any idea what caused the alarm to go off. Anyway, while I was glad that we weren't inhaling poison, the whole thing put me rather on edge and made it a little difficult to go to sleep that night. The alarm hasn't gone off again since, though, so hopefully it will stay that way, and spare us further need of the fire department's services.

On a far less hair-raising note, our new place does not have a microwave. Our old place did have one, but we really didn't use it all that often, so we decided to not buy one here right away and see if we actually need one or not. And so far, we really haven't needed it. Leftover chili can be heated up just as easily in a pot on the stove. And leftover pizza tastes better in the toaster oven than the microwave anyway! So we were good with no microwave, until the other night, when Brad and I decided to curl up and watch a movie. Me, rummaging for snacks: "Oooh, I'm just going to make this last bag of popcorn." Brad: " . . . we have no microwave." Me: " . . . shit." I know you can make popcorn on the stove, but I don't think that helps us with this one lonely bag of microwave popcorn that came with us in the move, and it certainly didn't help me when I wanted popcorn to go with our movie night. :( Very sad, indeed. Still, probably not going to buy a microwave just to make popcorn. I'll either have to learn how to make it on the stove or just buy a popcorn maker. We'll see.

In more fun nesting adventures, I may have mentioned that my dad agreed to help us buy a couch. We finally got a budget from him last week on what he can afford to spend ($500), so we went to look at some today. And omg, we totally fell in love with these. That chair is the most comfortable thing you have ever sat in. It will be so awesome for curling up and reading/knitting in (or gaming in, for Brad). The couch is equally comfy as well, and the pieces were all pretty reasonable prices. I think it was $499 for the couch, $479 for the loveseat, and $399 for the chair. (We're not getting the ottoman.) They weren't in stock today, so we put a deposit down on them, and they'll call us when they come in and can be delivered, which is free, yay! Obviously those prices mean we'll be paying for what my dad can't cover, and if we need to, we'll just cancel the loveseat, but I think we should be able to manage it. I can't wait till they come in and we can have super comfy furniture in our living room! I may never leave that chair once it's here, haha.

I think that's all I got for now. Hope you all had lovely weekends! I am going to just hang out over here and be in denial that June is this Friday, if that's all right with you!

So sometimes, you feel something, and you think "Gosh, that's awfully douchey of me! Well, chances are I won't feel this way shortly, because it's pretty stupid and illogical. I may as well not tell anyone, or at least not the object of my feelings, because that would just End Poorly and for no good reason! Let's ride this shit out quietly." Then you proceed to follow your own advice.

Then later on, it comes out somehow, and you feel like a gigantic dick for feeling what you felt. And then you get chided for not saying anything in the first place, and it's like..."This argument is precisely what I wanted to avoid! I know it was dickish of me to feel that way, so I didn't act on it!" But you're in trouble anyway.

Oof.

This will be a fun and SHORT! entry, I promise. I know my last two were rather long. So let's take a break from the heavy duty entries. First, Erin tagged me to answer some knitting questions.

1. Are you always happy with your FO’s?
Umm, I'd say mostly, but not always. There've been a couple things that I was proud of the work I put into them, but not completely happy because they came out too big or something like that. But lately, I'm more often happy than not.

2. Are you sometimes so disappointed that you frog everything and start a new project? Why? Color? Yarn? Making? Too small? Too large?
I've never frogged a finished object, but I've ripped out a couple things that I started because I already didn't like them and didn't want to continue them. Like when I made the wavy shawl for my mom, I first started a totally different shawl pattern, but pretty much hated the way it was coming out, so re-started after a couple inches. Another thing I ripped out was a striped scarf I'd started . . . mainly because I never really wanted to make it in the first place, and only started it out of boredom. :p

3. Do you wear your knits or do they end up at the bottom of a cupboard? If so, why? How do they age after being washed and worn?
I wear all of the scarves I've knit, and love them all. Have never washed any of them, but they're holding up pretty well for being worn. The only thing is some of them have gotten narrower in the middle, sort of squished together where I loop it around my neck, but I don't care about that. I have not, however, worn my tempting sweater, because the sizing was just a bit off and I could never figure out what weather it would be appropriate for anyway. So it sits at the bottom of my sweater pile. One day I will make another sweater and redeem the mistakes I made with that one. And most of my other wearable knits have been gifts for others, so I don't know if they're getting worn.

4. Do you always make a swatch? (maybe it should have been the first question, lol ?!)
Hahaha, gauge? What is that? Um. No, I have pretty much never swatched, though I think I'm about to start for the socks I'm going to make. To be fair, most of the stuff I've made to date has been stuff where gauge doesn't really matter too much. Next time I do a sweater, though, for sure. I think. :p

5. Finally, would you rather work with some yarns you know well rather than others to avoid bad surprises?
Nah, as long as the yarn feels nice, I'll work with whatever. No fun fur or novelty yarns, please, though. But otherwise, I really haven't established yarn preferences beyond 'oooooh soooffffffft'.

Let's see, Erin already tagged Lynn and Ilana to answer these, so I tag [info]eclpse, [info]kadenza, and [info]brainytype. Any other knitters who want to answer these, feel free!

Next, I stole this one from [info]impensada, because I thought it sounded really fun. You respond to this entry by telling me one true thing about yourself. It can be anything about you, big or small, silly or serious, and I’ll respond by telling you one true thing about me and so on and so forth until one or both of us dies of old age, becomes bored, or solves the case and catches the serial killer. Go forth!

I drew this tonight in about three hours. It's Sharpie pen on bristol, you can buy it at Kandeart.com for $75

I drew it sitting at my art desk. Because I'm so thoroughly pregnant my feet have been swollen and I've retained a lot of fluid. Sitting on my stool really aggravated that - my legs are HUGE right now from the pressure. It feels weird and somewhat uncomfortable so now the plan is to lay on the couch with my feet up until it resolves itself.

I took today off from work to get things done. Cleaned the bathroom, got the car fixed, took a nap. 4 day weekends are lovely.

The baby is due Monday, so I'm basically an insane person from waiting now. I've been poking my belly all week telling the kid to come on and get here already. Waiting has reduced my internal monologue to a long litany of impatience and excitement. Waiting sucks.

I'm sure I'll soon be of the opinion that labor also sucks, but for now...

I'll be totally done with my B.S. in Business Management (BS in BM, haha) as of Thursday. I have to write part of a group paper, do a presentation, and take a final exam. Then I am FREEEEEEEEEE from school forever or until I go get an MBA. Woohoo!

Subject:Let's play Guess the Hatcher Hatchling...
Time:5:06 pm.

I am full term this week (37+ weeks) and exhausted. AND super cranky. Oh, man, SO cranky. I still have a million things to do before the baby is born, but most of them involve organizing and cleaning... so I need a distraction. A fun one. This is where YOU come in!

I think pretty much everyone knows that we haven't found out the baby's sex. We thought it would be fun to have it be a surprise (who knows what we'll decide for subsequent baby-havings) and we also knew it would keep me from buying pink tutus if it's a girl (or, you know, blue tutus if it's a boy) and from having the bedroom next to ours end up looking like Strawberry Shortcake horked in there (kind of like this blog layout... heh). So, there's that. There’s also the fact that in spite of my due date being June 12th, the doctor shakes her head every time I have an appointment and just says it'll be born any time between NOW and the end of June. (How I am surviving with this much suspense when I like knowing everything in advance baffles even me. George, on the other hand, adoooores surprises.)

And this is where the game-playing comes in. Let's play guess the delivery date and sex! Just a few rules...

  • YOU CAN ONLY "PARTICIPATE" ONCE. YOU GET ONE VOTE... and it must be in the comments section of this post. Not on our statuses. Not via text message. And please, be really clear. "May 29th, girl" is fine. "Tuesday, boy" is not. WHICH TUESDAY?! And you really can guess any date in the next four to five weeks. We're not going to induce labor unless I go over 42 weeks, much to my OB's chagrin.

  • Any given date only has two options. Like, June 12th can be "June 12th, girl" or "June 12th, boy". Once someone uses a date and a sex, you can ONLY pick that same date for the opposite sex. And a "June 12th" vote counts as any time between 12:00:00am EST and 11:59:59pm EST on that date. (Eastern Standard Time since that's OUR time zone and therefore, the baby's birth date time zone.)

  • You cannot change your guess once you post it... and you cannot post more than one vote. If the date comes and goes... sorry, Charlie.

  • Once the first email, text message, or phone call goes out that I'm in labor, voting is closed.

  • Check the comments before yours: if someone already picked the date and sex combination, you can't pick the same one. If you are too lazy to check and thereby end up posting the same combo someone else already posted, the first person to have posted the correct one wins.

  • If no one guesses correctly, we will just give ourselves a prize! Just kidding. :) If no one guesses correctly, the person with the closest guess wins. If someone guesses May 27th and someone else the 29th, and the baby is born May 28th, the winner will be determined by whether the baby was born before or after noon.

The prize: It will probably take a couple weeks to get to you (especially if you don't live locally). Also, if you don't live locally, you'll obviously have to provide us with your address so we can send it to you. We have some ideas on what the prize/gift will be, but it'll definitely end up being something personalized and tailored to the person who wins (for example, we're not going to give one of our sisters the same thing we would give a guy friend). No matter what it ends up being, we'll try to make it something we think the specific person would like and appreciate.

May the person with the creepiest capacity of foreseeing the future win!

Subject:whaaaaaaaat, is this two posts from me in one weekend?
    Time:4:40 pm.
    Mood: relaxed.
The world must be ending, I know. But I keep doing stuff, so that keeps giving me stuff to write about! AND, bonus, I'm close to almost caught up on all of your entries. I only have to skip one page of entries to get to the most recent ones now, so I may even get fully caught up tonight! Amazing! (Oh, and yes, it is still the weekend for me. Three day weekend for Victoria Day, woot!)

Anyway, so Saturday, Brad and I had eye exams, I ordered more contacts, and the plan was for me to also get a new pair of glasses. However, my insurance coverage for vision is actually kind of shitty - we get $400 for both of us every two years. Which basically covers next to nothing. Consider that the exams themselves are $95 each, a year's supply of contacts for me can be anywhere up to $250, and if we want the extra retinal exam that's kind of important for Brad as a diabetic, it's another $45. I.e., we've spent all of our two years' worth of coverage and then some in one visit. Also, the way my insurance works, we pay for vision stuff up front and then get reimbursed.

So, having already shelled out over $400 for the exams and my contacts, we decided it might be better for us financially if we waited until Brad's working and we have a little more disposable income before we spend another several hundred on a new pair of glasses for me, especially when I only use them as a backup anyway. LensCrafters has a promotion going where if you bring in an old pair of glasses to donate, they'll take off $150 of the price of a new pair, which is great, but glasses are still crazy expensive. The frames I liked were about $175, I think, and the lenses alone were like $300 or something. UGH. The salesman there told us that they do have a deferred payment option where you have six months to pay with no interest, and we were like, great, let's do that, but unfortunately it required a credit check and we were denied.

I got really frustrated at that, because I hate how long it is taking to build up good credit and how effing difficult they make it for you to get any more credit. Not to mention the fact that I've had a car loan here for over a year and never missed a payment, and a credit card since September that I've paid off every month, but no, apparently those things do not count for anything. Brad said it's probably because we've gone up to the limit on the credit card almost every month, so even though we're paying it off, we're still using all of our credit and the powers that be who deign to hand out the credit don't like when you do that. Which is dumb, because it's basically saying, oh we'll only give you credit if you don't actually need or use the credit you have. What, you actually use your credit? Too bad, no more for you. Argh.

Aside from getting really irritated at the world of money and credit, Saturday was mostly uneventful, just hot. Oh, except that when I submitted the claim for Green Shield to reimburse us for the eye exams and contacts, they denied the claims because "the service is not a benefit based on provider type". Which is some bullshit right there because we were seen by licensed optometrists, so I will be harassing them once we are in normal business hours again. You WILL give me back my damn money, fuckers. For real, you don't want to mess with me on this one.

Okay, but really, there are good things to write about too! Yesterday I joined the American Expat meetup group for brunch at Brassaii, which was tasty and full of good conversations. It's definitely nice to talk to other people who can relate to all the crap I'm going through with immigration and whatnot, as well as understand what it's like to live on both sides of the border. So that was good times, and since I had time to kill afterwards, I wandered up to Queen Street in search of Romni. Pretty much all of my local knitting friends have been telling me forever that I needed to check this store out, and I just hadn't made it down there yet. So what happens when I finally do make it over there? They're closed on Sundays, of course. :( Very sad. I felt a little bit like I'd been turned away from the yarn mecca, but hopefully I'll be able to make it down there another time. Probably for the best that they were closed anyway, as I don't know if I really should have been spending money on yarn yesterday.

After my failed yarn store attempt, I took the streetcar over to Yonge and walked up to the Panasonic Theatre, where Amy and I were seeing Rent. I was really excited about the show going in, because it's one of my favorites, even though I'd never seen it live before. I love love love the movie and the soundtrack. Unfortunately, I couldn't really say the same about this performance. It was good, but not great. For one, I was a little thrown by how not diverse the cast was. There was an Asian girl playing Mimi and one African American girl in the ensemble, and that was it. Everyone else on stage was white. :-/ Second, I just didn't feel the emotion and the connection between the characters that I would have expected. There were moments here and there, but certainly nothing that moved me to tears, which happens every time I watch the movie. Finally, the actor playing Roger was just not well suited to the role. He really did not do the part justice, I felt, and almost made the character kind of annoying to watch. Still, despite all my criticisms, I did have a good time and I'm glad Amy and I were able to go.

Today has mostly been catching up on LJ, interspersed with doing dishes and hanging up the bulletin board in the third bedroom. This made me really happy, as I have stuff that I haven't been able to display for about 3 years now, because I didn't have a bulletin board for awhile after I moved up here. So it was nice to see that stuff finally back up on the wall instead of tucked into a box for safekeeping. Plan for the rest of today: more LJ catch up, and maybe starting a nice simple crochet dishcloth, as an easy project before I tackle the world of socks. Hope you're all doing well!

Subject:and while your troubles are off running wild
    Time:10:40 am.
    Mood: happy.
Well, going out three nights this week hasn't really helped my efforts at being a better LJ friend, although it has given me more interesting things to write about! So, that's at least half a win, right?

Tuesday after work, a bunch of the girls from my knitting group and I went to see The Pirates!, Band of Misfits at the Yorkdale movie theater. And oh, so much fun. The movie was pretty funny, and Hugh Grant was the voice of the pirate captain, which I hadn't realized going in. There's also a scene in the movie where the pirate captain is knitting, and we all totally cheered, lol. Knitters for the win! . . . Actually, I just realized that a large portion of this entry is going to concern knitting or knitting-related activities. You've been warned. ;) Anyway, so during the movie, the power went out in the theater for a hot minute. Seriously, it was probably 30 seconds or less before the movie came back on, not much of a big deal. But, when the movie was over, there was an employee at the exit giving everyone in the theater courtesy tickets to make up for it! So we all ended up with a free movie ticket on top of having an enjoyable time! Win. Then we hung out and chatted in the food court for awhile, and it was definitely a good night all around.

I'd actually gotten to the mall about a half hour early, so I decided to browse the Old Navy that's right near the movie theater. I always joke about how I'm the Old Navy poster child because probably half my wardrobe is from there, but they can be hit or miss. However, this time was definitely a hit; I was pretty much in love with just about everything on the racks. Fortunately, I showed some restraint and only bought 4 things, 3 of which were under $10! I got one of these in lead pipe for $5 (of course now they're $4, but whatevs), one of the smocked-gauze keyhole tanks for $8 (can't link, because it says it's out of stock), one of these tanks, possibly in the warm fire red, though I think mine's actually a brighter color (and this is probably my favorite purchase, because it makes me look like I have boobs!), and a t-shirt that I think is one of their vintage style ones, but blue and white striped. And I spent under $40 for all of it! :D Yay cute clothes.

Then on Wednesday, Erin invited us to go to a meeting of the Downtown Knit Collective at which Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, the Yarn Harlot, was giving a talk on "Your Brain on Knitting". It was a really interesting talk, but beyond that, the Yarn Harlot was hilarious! She had me laughing until I cried several times. And it was just really cool to be in a room full of other knitters, of other people who get this thing we do with yarn and why we do it. I felt like I was among my people, haha. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see [info]kadenza there selling some letterpress cards she'd made, as well as a few other goodies. I bought a really cute shirt from her for Becca's baby that says 'future knitter' on it, because clearly I had to. Definitely another good night, and I'm really glad I went to the talk.

I've been working on a shawl for a couple months now, and was almost finished it when the remains of my yarn ball disintegrated into a giant tangled clusterfuck. It was such a mess that it literally took hours and hours for several people to untangle it. Kim had worked on it at knit night two weeks ago, I worked on it on my own for awhile, Ilana and Kim both took stabs at it during the Yarn Harlot's talk . . . it was ridiculous. But thanks to everyone's efforts, enough had been untangled from the other end that we were able to break the yarn, Ilana spit-spliced the ends together, and I was able to resume knitting. I made good progress at knitting group on Thursday, and then was able to finish and cast off last night! It still needs to be blocked, for which I will have to borrow Lynn's blocking pads and pins because I don't yet have my own, but I'm super excited that it's done and I can't wait to block it and take pictures for everyone! I'm really proud of how it's come out. :) Not to mention super grateful for the patience of everyone who helped me untangle the mess!

All right, fine, so you want some non-knitting-related news, huh? Well, rumour has it that I'm going to be given a permanent probationary position at work. This was apparently decided in a negotiation between HR and my union, and even my boss was not involved in the conversation, but just informed of what the plan is. The issue was that I've really been filling a permanent position the whole time, but they couldn't officially make me permanent while I was still on a work permit. So my understanding is that the probationary bit means that I still have to provide appropriate immigration documents until my PR comes through. Which is fine, it's what I would have done anyway. I'm just not sure logistically how all this plays out, and since I haven't actually received anything in writing about this yet, I don't fully know what all the details are. I do know that I'm being evaluated, which only happens once you're permanent, sooo I guess that's a good sign? Really, though, I just want my PR to come through so I can be done with all of this nonsense.

To follow up on some of the things I bitched about last entry, I left a note on our neighbor's windshield when I came home Tuesday night and he was partly parked on our driveway again. Since then, he has parked fully on his own driveway, so yay progress! Also, our landlord had a contractor come look at our faulty doorbell on Wednesday. While he didn't actually fix anything yet, he did discover that it's set up on a wireless signal, and our neighbors likely have theirs set to the same frequency, which means we might be hearing our doorbell when someone rings theirs. Lovely. But hopefully now that someone's been to look at it, it will actually get fixed? We can hope. Still no news on the dishwasher, though. :-/

Also! Oooooooomg, the Once Upon a Time finale! Blargh, I hate that I have to wait several months for the next season to start; I'm so curious to see where they're going to take the show. It was a good finale, though, made more enjoyable because Sarah and I had a video chat date to talk about it. During said chat, I made the discovery that my laptop does in fact have a built in mic! No, this is a big deal. I've had this laptop for almost a year and a half, and I only JUST figured this out. I knew it had the built in webcam, but I didn't know there was a mic too, so I've been futzing around with Brad's headset every time I wanted to chat with someone. :p Sooo you know, that makes my life a little easier.

Wednesday was kind of an irritating day all around, because there were a million mini crises at work, and then my shoe broke in the middle of the day! Remember my summer shoe buying adventure last summer? Yeah, those shoes, the ones I have not even had for a full year yet, broke. The elastic at the back just snapped, which made walking around for the rest of the day rather difficult and annoying. But I dropped them off to be repaired yesterday, so hopefully they'll last a little longer. Also, while at the mall, I decided to make use of some coupons I had that were going to expire shortly. I got these sandals, regularly $27.99 in Canada, with my 40% off coupon, so I paid like $18 for them. And they're such a fun color! :) Then I went to Aerie and got this super cute bra, also bought with a 40% off coupon! They also had a sale going where you could get 5 pairs of undies for $16, which is a great deal, so I grabbed some. Then at the register, I round out they were an additional 30% off, so I got them for $12! Total win! :D I love getting great deals.

Okay, I think this entry is probably lengthy enough, plus Brad and I need to go shower because we've got eye exams at noon. I'm getting new glasses, woo! I mostly wear contacts, but I always keep a pair of glasses as backup, except the pair I have now is at least 5 years old, so the prescription is pretty out of date. Time to replace them! Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

    Time:5:24 am.

It is the beginning of hurricane season and it is time to dream of perfect scenarios where the storm spins offshore, not making landfall,  and creates perfect waves.  To start it all off, the eastern pacific already has its first storm. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/   Doesn't look like it will do much. I know that there won't be a storm on the east coast worth talking about until August/September, but that is only three months away!

So despite my job not rewarding me for any of my productive contributions, I have managed to win a few plane vouchers based on...well, who knows really, but not merit. The first (of four) I used to secure a plane ticket to Toronto. My lovely cousin Elise lives there, with her husband and two children, and she was throwing a party. And I do love a good party. I also like traveling, and I'd never been to Canada. And let's be honest, Chicago has not been a lot of fun for me lately, and I was eager to leave, even if just for a weekend.

Elise and James have a lovely home (as you'd expect, from two architects) and a lovely backyard (as you'd expect, from two LANDSCAPE architects). A mass of Irish Canadians (James' family), coworkers, neighbors, and various friends descended upon it to wish Elise a happy 40th.

I had no idea going into the trip that Toronto had a shoe museum. But guess what, Toronto has a shoe museum.

Anyone who follows me on Facebook (or has met me) knows that I love burgers. And in my quick research of "where to eat" in Toronto, I came across Nota Bene. It's actually a fancy place that I was surprised served a burger, but I'm very glad they did.

Toronto was lovely, the weather was lovely, and of course the company was lovely.

I used my next plane voucher to book a flight to Baton Rouge, so I'll see my family Father's Day weekend.

So, I got a new camera.

    A way nicer one.

I'm still fiddling around with it, but it's definitely one of the sexier things I've ever owned in my lifetime so I'm pretty excited about it, to say the least. It's about time.

    Mood: blah.
At the insistence of Sanzo and The Chibi, I have made Korra, Mako and Bolin worry dolls. I am a little worried about getting Korra's hair right. It's going to take some serious detail work. Bolin's got his little curl, and Mako uses product, for which I have glue, but Korra's wrapped ponytails are going to be tough. Kyo, Duo, Trowa, Wufei, Draco, Hermione and Sasuke all got hair and pins today, though, so it's been a good day. Sadly, I have to go to work and deal with The Queen (of drama) tomorrow. I took both days off last week, as I was sick. I'm still not full strength, but I can't miss any more work.
